Werder Bremen are mourning the loss of their former head coach and player Kuno Klötzer. The Saxony native, who was responsible for rebuilding the team in the 2nd Bundesliga North division in 1980 and played a major role in the Green-Whites promotion back to the German top flight, died last Saturday at the age of 89.

Klötzer lived in Norderstedt after finishing his coaching career in 1982. "Knight Kuno" - as Klötzer was known in the game - spent 30 years in the coaching business and guided Werder Bremen to promotion to the first division in 1980 before being involved in a major traffic accident on 8 February 1981 which would not allow him to continue coaching along the Weser. His successor was Otto Rehhagel.

"We mourn the loss of a great man and dear friend who always lived up to his nickname ‘Knight Kuno". I had contact with him recently at the North Derbies in Hamburg. He always mentioned that he enjoyed very much his time along the Weser as player and coach despite his love to Hamburg," said Klaus-Dieter Fischer, president of SV "Werder" von 1899 e.V.

Among Klötzer's biggest successes were promotion to the Bundesliga with Werder Bremen (1981), Kickers Offenbach (1972) and Fortuna Düsseldorf (1966) as well as winning the European Cup Winners Cup with Hamburg in 1977. Klötzer also spent time coaching at Rot-Weiss Essen, Nuremberg, Hertha BSC Berlin and MSV Duisburg
