Christian Schulz wore the Werder diamond on his jersey for 14 years and helped the club win the league and cup double in 2003-04. In the summer of 2007, "Schulle" transferred to Hannover. Before the small North Derby between Werder and Hannover on Sunday 13 February 2011, he took some time out to speak with WERDER.DE.
Hello Schulle, how are you doing?
I am doing very good. Of course everything feels a lot better after the success of the current season.
Speaking of the successful season, you are coming to Weser Stadium on Sunday as fourth-best on the table. Is that ranking just as surprising for the team as it is for most of the experts, or did you see it coming?
We worked very well in the summer preparations and prepared ourselves for this. That it would go so well was not expected necessarily.
One cannot really speak of close matches recently between Werder and Hannover. The last two matches ended with 4-1 for Hannover and 5-1 for Werder. You are fighting for an international spot and Werder need every point against the relegation at the moment. Do you think about this at all before the game?
Of course, I can't just look past Werder's situation because I played many years on the other side and played in the stadium. I always felt super accepted in Bremen, lived in the boarding school and went the normal path from the youth to the amateurs to the professionals. That's why the games against Werder are always something special. But I have been a professional for four years with Hannover now and am trying to do the best for the club.
Do you think that it will mainly be about the battling on Sunday and that Werder can display their usual playing means with the situation in the background?
I don't think you can just jump ship on everything which brought so much success over the recent years. Werder always stood for excellent, attractive and successful football. But it's naturally not an easy situation when you start a season with certain expectations and after 21 game days you only have a one-point margin over the relegation zone. Werder must now stick together as a team. I am anxious to see how Bremen get themselves out of this situation.
