Franco di Santo is the Green-Whites great attacking hope. On Thursday, a new chapter began for the lofty Argentine in Bremen on Thursday. WERDER.DE had the chance to speak with the 24 year old, who follows in the footsteps of fellow countryman Rodolfo Esteban Cardoso at Werder.
Hello Franco and welcome to SV Werder. What inspired you to make the move here to the banks of the Weser?
Franco Di Santo: „SV Werder Bremen is not just a club steeped in tradition but also one of the best teams in the Bundesliga. It is an honour for me that such a big club has shown an interest".
You have quite a significant career chapter ahead of you: A new home, a new club, a new language - a problem for you at all?
Franco Di Santo: „Well it's not to be forgotten that this is the first time I will play for a German club. I want to try learn the language as quickly as possible. Thanks to my time in England, I do speak good English so I'm sure I'll have no problems settling in. It's not the first time I am shifting my life to a new location either".
Now on a more personal level: How would you describe yourself and what type of player are you?
Franco Di Santo: „I am a player who is continually locked onto the opponent's goal. In spite of the fact that I am 1,93 meters tall, I am technically capable and mobile. I am also two-footed, which is a great advantage. Even on my bad days I do my all for the team. The fans will see from my performances that I have some here to help but I will of course be rated on the goals I score".
You will be wearing the number 9 jersey - a number with great significance for strikers. Was it your wish to get that number?
Franco Di Santo: „Of course, even in Argentina, the number 9 really means something. We have a long tradition of producing great front men. Batistuta, Kempes, Passarella, Luque. My role-model is Hernan Crespo. His style of play really inspired me".
Franco, one last thing - is there anything you wish to say to the Werder fans?
Franco Di Santo: „I am delighted to be here and I promise that very soon, every fan will see what Franco Di Santo is capable of, that I can be relied upon and that I can pay back the fate placed in me with good performances. I personally, and we as a team, need a little time. The fans need to be patient if things don't all work out immediately".
