Sebastian Prödl has been among the strongest players for the Green-Whites for weeks. The Austrian has been like a rock on defence for Werder while also scoring two goals in the last two games for Bremen. After the last-minute goal in Hannover and before the important match against Schalke 04, the defensive boss met with WERDER.DE for an interview.
WERDER.DE: Hello Basti, at the beginning of the week, you told us that hadn't slept very well after the match in Hannover. Were you able to get over those sleeping problems?
Sebastian Prödl: "Regardless of the match on Sunday, I rarely sleep well after matches. Often you have to process everything again, even if you don't want to do that sometimes."
WERDER.DE: But I can imagine that you gladly would have done that on Sunday ...
Sebastian Prödl: "Of course it was a special highlight scoring the goal and winning the game. That made the sleeplessness even more extreme than usual. But I am recovered again and am confident about the match against Schalke."
WERDER.DE: The fact that the team has kept a clean sheet nine times this season also likely increases the confidence of a defensive player ...
Sebastian Prödl: "We have definitely improved in that area - regardless of how our goal differential ends up being. But we have to play more consistently."
WERDER.DE: And what role do the fans play?
Sebastian Prödl: "They are unbelievably important for us. Hannover serves as a very good example. Before that we had played two matches that were unsatisfactory and then there is nearly a Champions League-like atmosphere in Hannover. The fans pushed us forward and turned it into a super derby. The loyal Werder fans are definitely a reason that this club will remain great despite the current situation."
WERDER.DE: Robin Dutt especially praised the strong Schalke attack. What kind of match do you expect?
Sebastian Prödl: "Schalke have often had to deal with missing players but still put out a Champions League-level team on the pitch. They have a very deep roster. In the second half they have only lost one match, and that was against Bayern. That speaks for itself. They are on a roll, have extreme confidence and will also try to play their style here. But we have the fans - and a victory - behind us. We will hold our own against that. It will be hard work but it will be the same for Schalke as well."
