Jupp Heynckes has won everything there is to win during his career in professional football. He was German champion, German Cup winner, world champion, European champion and Champions League winner. The list is quite long. On Sunday, the former Real Madrid coach and current boss at Bayer Leverkusen arrives at Bremen's Weser Stadium. Before the game against Thomas Schaaf's team, Heynckes answered Bremen journalists' questions in a telephone conference. WERDER.DE was on hand and also asked some questions as well.
Mr. Heynckes, Bayer Leverkusen are currently second on the table and that as the second-best team away from home in the league. Werder meanwhile are in the lower third of the table. Your team is clearly the favourite in this contest. You have a tip about how Bremen can stop Leverkusen?
Heynckes: Well, it's not my job to tell you that. We are definitely best served to travel to Bremen with a humble attitude and once again try to play the same football as the past few weeks - successful and good football. Naturally we are going for a victory. That is clear.
The Werder leadership is clearly supporting the duo of Klaus Allofs and Thomas Schaaf. Is that a lesson others should follow?
Heynckes: I think that Thomas Schaaf has earned that over the many years. Along with Klaus Allofs, they are a tandem which was also responsible for much success. Werder is a different club than many others. Personally I find that good, comforting and positive.
Claudio Pizarro and Tim Wiese will be back on Sunday for Bremen while Torsten Frings is suspended after his fifth yellow card. How will this personnel situation affect your preparations for the game and your game plan?
Heynckes: Of course you analyse your opponent, how they play and how they are tactically aligned. With the goalkeeper situation it's naturally a big difference in quality level. Though you must say that his backup, Sebastian Mielitz, has done a good job. Pizarro meanwhile is a player of very high quality. But that doesn't change my tactical line-up at all. Just the opposite is the case. We will push the ball, like in Frankfurt, in Kharkov or on Thursday in the BayArena.
