Denni Avdic did not want to make the news this way. On Wednesday, he had to read an article with the headline: "Turmoil about Avdic - The striker kept secret his injury". On Thursday, Werder manager Klaus Allofs proclaimed his support for the Swedish striker after a talk with him. "It is absolutely not the case that he said something foul," said Allofs. WERDER.DE wanted to know exactly and met Avdic for an interview.
Hello Denni, you underwent hip surgery three weeks ago, how are you now?
Denni Avdic: Physically I am doing better than a couple weeks ago. Things are slowly getting better since the operation.
Were you surprised on Wednesday to read the headline: "Turmoil about Avdic - The striker kept secret his injury"?
Denni Avdic: I told the journalist that in the summer a year ago - while I was still in Sweden - that I had problems in the hip for a couple days. But that passed quickly. How that was presented in the newspaper, I cannot let that go. Somebody didn't think at all about what this kind of article can mean to a player. Swedish journalists stormed to my agent and asked what's wrong. I was very surprised.
When did the problems begin with Werder?
Denni Avdic: We trained very hard in the winter after my arrival and at a different level than in Sweden. During this time a couple of problems began in my hip. But I was a new player and wanted to play through it. That is nothing out of the ordinary if you are a professional. The problem was that the problems only got worse this summer.
Your first year with Werder did not go as planned.
Denni Avdic: You can say that. I am absolutely frustrated. But I have enough motivation to fight. I did not sign here just to have a contract. I came to another country and left behind friends and family. I signed here to play good football, score goals and give people pleasure. The fans give a lot for this club, I would like to give something back. That is still my plan.
