Germany and Werder defender Per Mertesacker, who played a full 90 minutes, played to a 1-1 draw against Italy. Miroslav Klose gave Germany the lead in the 16th minute before Giuseppe Rossi scored the equaliser after 81 minutes. "It's aggravating that we took away some tempo in the final quarter-hour and did not really find the means to put more pressure in the second half to get the second goal. That would have been the knock-out for Italy," said Mertesacker.
Arnautovic scores in Austrian loss
Sebastian Prödl and Marko Arnautovic lost with the Austrian national team 3-1 against the Netherlands in Eindhoven. Arnautovic scored the only goal for the guests in the 84th minute from the penalty spot. Germany's U21 team played to a 0-0 draw against Greece in Athens, where Werder's Felix Kroos celebrated his debut in coach Rainer Adrion's team. The U20 German juniors did better in beating Italy 3-1 in Oberhausen as Dresden's Alexander Esswein scored a hat-trick.
Werder's Pascal Testroet was subbed in for the three-time scorer at the break. The German U19s also celebrated a victory with Lennart Thy starting in the 1-0 victory over England and Bremen teammate Florian Trinks was subbed into the game around the hour mark.
