It was a clean sheet - just for the wrong side. None of the Werder non-German internationals were able to celebrate a goal for their respective national teams Tuesday evening. Petri Pasanen, Marko Arnautovic and Claudio Pizarro suffered collectively two losses and a goal-less draw.
In a showdown of former teammates Tuesday evening in Aveiro, Portugal, Werder defender Pasanen and his Finnish national team lost 2-0 against the Portuguese team with former Bremen striker Hugo Almeida. Pasanen played the full 90 minutes in the four-man Finnish backline, which gave up two goals to debutant Ruben Micael.
Pizarro was back in his national team colours but Werder's striker and the Peruvian national team played to a scoreless draw in a test match against Ecuador. Sergio Markarian's team had to play the final 63 minutes a man down after Christian Ramos was sent off with a red card. Pizarro had to be subbed off five minutes before the final whistle after receiving a knock on his ankle. It remains to be seen how long he will be out.
There were important points for the 2012 European Championship up for grab Tuesday evening for Werder striker Arnautovic and his Austrians. Dietmar Constantini's Austrians lost the crucial game 2-0 against Turkey in Istanbul. Arnautovic was brought on with 20 minutes left but could not really make his mark. Arda Turan (28th) and Gökhan Gönül (77th) scored the goals for Turkey at Sükrü Saracoglu Stadium. Duisburg player Stefan Maierhofer had his penalty in the 85th minute stopped by Turkish keeper Volkan Demirel as Austria have seven points after five games in Group A for fourth place.
