Head coach Thomas Schaaf will be missing a dozen players from Werder training this week. Usually that would be a real problem for a normal Bundesliga week. But the 12 players were nominated for their respective national teams for international friendlies on Wednesday 14 November 2012.

Eljero Elia was a late nomination during the last national team break but Dutch head coach Louis van Gaal called up the winger straight away and will be on the squad for the Netherlands' match against Germany in Amsterdam. Werder fans can watch Elia against Germany live on German channel ARD starting at 8:30 p.m.

All three Austrians in Schaaf's team can hope to play for their national team on Wednesday as Marko Arnautovic, Zlatko Junuzovic and Sebastian Prödl take on Ivory Coast in Linz. Bremen's U23 keeper Richard Strebinger meanwhile was nominated for Austria's U21 team's showdown with Greece.

Kevin De Bruyne and the Belgian national team will square off against Romania in the Romanian capital Bucharest while Mehmet Ekici and Turkey take on Denmark in Istanbul, and Aleksandar Ignjovski and Serbia face off against Chile in the neutral location St. Gallen, Switzerland.

Werder's defensive boss Sokratis and Greece will be heading to Dublin to play Ireland with the centre back expecting to earn his 36th cap.

There are three Bremen players in Germany's 17-man U20 national team as Niclas Füllkrug, Florian Hartherz and Johannes Wurtz all have good chances of playing against Poland in Gliwice.

All of the players are expected back in Bremen by the end of the week in time for the Bundesliga match against Fortuna Düsseldorf on Sunday 18 November 2012.
