Sokratis has done it! Werder's Greek international has qualified for the 2012 European Championship after Greece's 2-1 victory over Georgia Tuesday night 11 October 2011.
Sokratis played the full 90 minutes in the defence and watched as former Werder stri1ker Angelos Charisteas, who played in Bremen from 2002 to 2005, scored the winning goal shortly before the end of the game. The victory gave the Greeks first place in Group F ahead of Croatia, who beat Latvia 2-0 to take second place and advance to the playoffs.
Also in the playoffs are Mehmet Ekici and the Turkish national team after a 1-0 victory over Azerbaijan. The playoffs will be played on 11 and 15 November. Ekici watched the game from the bench.
The German national team - without Werder keeper Tim Wiese, who was in the stands - had before hand cleared the path for the Turks by beating Belgium 3-1 in Düsseldorf. Turkey finished second ahead of Belgium while Austria with Bremen players Sebastian Prödl und Marko Arnautovic were fourth and will not be at Euro2012. Austria played to a scoreless draw in Kazakhstan with Prödl playing the whole game and Arnautovic being subbed out with five minutes to play.
Claudio Pizarro scored a goal as Peru lost 4-2 to Chile in Santiago de Chile in their World Cup 2014 qualification match in South America. The Peruvians have three points from two matches and are on a good path to the World Cup in Brazi.
