Werder players Sebastian Prödl, Theodor Gebre Selassie and Levent Aycicek all played Tuesday evening in their respective national teams. Prödl and Austria beat Ireland while Gebre Selassie and the Czechs and Germany's U20 and Aycicek were unable to celebrate a win. The trio of Zlatko Junuzovic (injury), Cedrick Makiadi and Özkan Yildirim had all already returned to Bremen in the previous few days.

The Austrian national team and Prödl kept alive their chances for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil in the final minutes of their game against Ireland, winning 1-0 on David Alaba's goal in the 84th minute Tuesday night in Vienna. The Werder centre back played the full match for Austria, who are third in Group C but still three points behind the playoff spot, currently held by Sweden. The Austrians face off against Sweden on 11 October 2013 with a big chance of moving closer to the World Cup in Brazil.

The World Cup is nearly out of reach for Gebre Selassie and the Czech national team as they lost 2-1 against Italy despite having a 1-0 lead. Gebre Selassie, who was subbed out in the 77th minute, caused a penalty in the 54th minute which Mario Balotelli converted for the win.

Aycicek also could not get a victory with Germany's U20 team as they lost 1-0 to Switzerland in Wohlen. Aycicek played the second half for Germany.
