Sebastian Prödl and Marko Arnautovic did not have much time after the final whistle in Mainz to celebrate the last minute point. While their Werder team-mates flew together back home to Bremen from Frankfurt on Saturday, the two Austrians took a flight to Vienna and their national team. "We agreed that we would fly directly there after the game so that we can be there straight away at the first training Sunday morning," said Prödl after the game in Mainz. Prödl and Arnautovic and their Austrian teammates will square off against the Dutch national team in a friendly on Wednesday 9 February 2011 in Eindhoven.

Per Mertesacker faces Italy with the German national team on Wednesday.

A day later than the Austrians, Per Mertesacker made his way on international duty, travelling with the train Sunday morning from Bremen to Dortmund, where he and the German national team will face off with the 2006 world champions Italy on Wednesday at 8:45 p.m. at Signal Iduna Park. Werder teammates Tim Wiese and Marko Marin were not nominated by German national team coach Joachim Löw for the game. "That is too bad, but that way we have a chance to concentrate on bringing the team further here in Bremen," said Marin about the positives of not begin nominated.

Four other Werder players are on international duty. Felix Kroos was nominated by coach Rainer Adrion for the first time for the German U21 national team, which will take on Greece on Wednesday in Athens. Pascal Testroet was selected for the German U20s and the match against Italy Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. in Oberhausen. On Tuesday evening 8 February 2011, the German U19 team with Lennary Thy and Florian Trinks will challenge England in Chesterfield at 8:30 p.m.
