Austria picked up three important points in their fight for a spot in the World Cup by beating Sweden 2-1 on Friday 7 June 2013 thanks to the Werder trio of Marko Arnautovic, Zlatko Junuzovic and Sebastian Prödl.
Austria were clearly the better team in Vienna and went ahead through goals by David Alaba (26th) and Marc Janko (32nd). While Prödl came on for the injured Emanuel Pogatetz in the 29th minute, Arnautovic and Junuzovic started the match. "Zladdi" was subbed out 15 minutes before the end of the game.
Another Werder player all but destroyed Serbia's last hope of reaching the World Cup as Belgium and Kevin De Bruyne beat Serbia 2-1 in Group A action. Aleksandar Ignjovski did not play for Serbia while De Bruyne headed in the opening goal for Belgium in the 13th minute.
In the last match with Werder participation, Theodor Gebre Selassie and Czech Republic played to a 0-0 draw with Italy. The Werder defender played the entire match for the Czechs, who continue to trail first placed Italy by five points with four remaining matches.
