Werder's injury bad luck will not go away as SVW will have to do without Sebastian Prödl for the coming weeks. An examination Friday morning found that the centre back had suffered a torn thigh tendon in Thursday afternoon's training. "This is a real shock for me. I felt good, was top fit and there were no signs of this. I expected anything but not an injury," said Prödl.
The 23-year-old has played 35 matches for Werder this season, missing only the Cologne game with a booking suspension. It is unclear how long Prödl will be out. "This is a very rare injury. Therefore we have to wait and see about the healing process," said the Austrian, who will not only miss action for Werder but will also be out for the Austrian national team's games against Belgium (25 March in Vienna) and Turkey (29 March in Istanbul).
"Would have liked to have faced the relegation challenge"
"The combination is double bitter. I would have liked to have faced the relegation challenge. It's not exactly the nicest of experiences but you can learn a lot. And it's also too bad that I will miss the international matches. I am a starter in the national team and wanted to make a statement internationally as well," said the 23-year-old, who remained upbeat. "This is a fact that I have to deal with now. There's no use in grieving over it. Instead I will take things how they are and hope that I can get fit as quickly as possible. I will give everything I have to get back."
Thomas Schaaf also regrets the loss of the 1.95m defender. "The fact that Sebastian will be out is very, very aggravating and is just the latest in a series of injuries which we have dealt with this season," said the head coach. "I hope the healing process goes well and that he can be available again soon."
