Werder's young talent Levent Aycicek suffered a bitter setback as the 17-year-old midfielder suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during Werder's U19 team's 4-1 victory over Union Berlin over the weekend. The injury will keep Aycicek out for the rest of the season for the Green-Whites.
For Aycicek, the injury means an abrupt end to a successful sports year 2011. He helped Werder's U17 juniors to a runners-up spot last summer in the German championship and the returned from the U17 World Championship with the bronze medal. As a U19 talent, Aycicek also was able to get his first experience with Werder Bremen's professional team over the past few weeks, playing in test matches against Union Berlin, Fenerbahce and TSV Höpfingen.
