Werder Bremen could consider their point at Schalke in the Bundesliga on Saturday as a definite point won. Their opponents in Champions League Group C had mixed fortunes in their respective leagues at the weekend. Olympiakos piräus drew, Real Madrid won at home whilst Lazio Rome suffered a defeat in front of their own fans.

Werder’s last, and next, opponents in the UEFA Champions League have not been enjoying much luck in the Italian Serie A of late. In front of their own fans at the Olympia Stadium, Lazio Rome were beaten by the surprisingly effective Udinese Calcio. Lazio were reduced to trying their luck from distance whilst their own veteran goalkeeper Ballotta was peppered with shots from every position. The 43 year old keeper was helpless to prevent the decider in the 78th minute when gyan Asamoah was left completely unmarked in the six yard box to head home a di Natale cross. Lazio may be on the same number of points as AC Milan but are well aware that they now lie in fourteenth place, just three points clear of the drop zone.

Real Madrid played host to Deportivo La Coruna on Sunday evening. The Spanish champions from 2000 are currently a mere mid-table shadow of their former selves in the Primera División and know the relegation battle is knocking at their door in this form. All the more surprising came the lead for Deportivo through Xisco in the second minute. The joy didn’t last long as Ruud van Nistlerooy again took on the task of converting a penalty kick to draw his side back level in the eighth minute. It took until the 79th minute until substitute Raúl could put the home side in front as he combined with van Nistlerooy to score. A minute later the visitors were reduced to ten men when Gonzalez Sergio saw a second yellow. Real made it 3:1 as Robinho got on the end of a Guti before beating three defenders and then slotting the ball past the keeper. Bernd Schuster’s side now lead the Spanish league with a two point jump on arch rivals FC Barcelona.

The match of the weekend for a Werder Champions League opponent was the clash between FC Ergotelis and Olympiakos Piräus. The hosts from Crete took the lead with a Junior penalty after 20 minutes and just three minutes later it was 2:0 as Theodoridis headed home. Before the break the champions woke to the danger and goals from Julio Caesar (38’) and a distance drive from Darko Kovacevic saw Piräus pull level. A Predrag Djordjevic gave his side the lead from the spot but Olympiakos failed to take their chances and found themselves back on level terms with two minutes to go. Piräus move into third place behind Panathinaikos Athens and league leaders AEK Athens who are six points clear with six wins from six and a 12:0 goal difference.
