Despite having been shown the red card in the DFB Cup first round tie against Eintracht Braunschweig, Werder Bremen’s lofty central defender Per Mertesacker will be eligible to play against MSV Duisburg on Wednesday in the second round. The German international profits from the success of the Werder reserves who have also qualified for round two and will take on FC St. Pauli on Tuesday night. According to the DFB regulations, Mertesacker can sit out his suspension in that game and join his first team colleagues for Wednesday’s match.
This situation is nothing new in the DFB Cup. Last season, Aachen’s Thomas Stehle was able to sit out his first round suspension from the previous season when Aachen’s reserves went to play VfB Stuttagrt the day before the first team travelled to Chemnitz for their game. Stehle was not selected on the night but was eligible to participate.
