When the referee gets Werder Bremen’s next game under way at 8:45pm on Wednesday evening against Lazio Rome, it will be all about picking up a vital first three points in the Champions League for Thomas Schaaf’s men. Werder.de have put together some interesting facts surrounding the game.

Did you know....?

...that despite their poor start, Werder still have a good chance of progressing to the next round of the competition? In the 2005/2006 season, before the third match day in the Champions League, the Green-Whites were bottom of their group without a single point to their credit. After six match days, seven points were enough to see the club move into the second round as second placed side in the group. Strangely, back then, Werder’s group opponents also came from Greece, Spain and Italy. Bremen were the first side since 2002/2003 to progress in the competition despite suffering three defeats.

...that Lazio have been waiting seven group games in the Champions League for a win? The Italian sides last win in the competition, with the exception of qualification games, was back on September 16th 2003 as Jaap Stam and Stefano Fiore were on target in the clubs 2:0 win over Besiktas Istanbul.

...that Bremen have never been b eaten at home by Italian opponents? In nine home meetings, Werder have until now managed four wins and five draws. The last game was in the second round of the tournament in 2005/2006 when goals from Johan Micoud, Christian Schulz and Tim Borowski helped the German side to a 3:2 win over Juventus Turin.

...that Lazio have only twice been faced by Bundesliga teams in international competition? In the UEFA Cup group phase 1999/2000, Lazio drew 1:1 with Bayer 04 Leverkusen. In the same competition in 1994/1995 the Rome club beat Borussia Dortmund 1:0 at home but lost the return leg in Germany and were eliminated from the tournament at the quarter final stage.
