Having made their comebacks in the Bundesliga, Torsten Frings, Tim Borowski and Clemens Fritz are all ready to add their weight to the German national team. Along with Per Mertesacker a total of four Weder Bremen players will join the Germany squad for their Euro 2008 qualifiers in Dublin against Ireland on Saturday, 13.10.2007 and in Munich on Wednesday, 17.10.2007 against the Czech Republic. A win in Dublin would be enough to guarantee Joachim Loew’s men a place in next year’s tournament in Switzerland and Austria.

A number of other Werder players wish to achieve the very same goal and will be on duty for their respective national teams in the coming week too.

Jurica Vranjes will be hoping to defend the top spot in Group E when they play Israel (fourth place) on Saturday, 13.10.2007. Croatia are top of the group with 23 points from nine games ahead of England (20 points) and Russia (18 points). The Croatians will take on German group opponents Slovakia in a friendly on Wednesday, 17.10.2007.

Petri Pasanen and Hugo Almeida will not come face to face when Portugal and Finland play in Group A but the two nations will have an eye on each other. Finland are currently two points to the better in the table but the Portuguese have a game in hand over their northern opponents. Hugo Almeida and his colleagues have the opportunity to surpass the Finns with successful results against Azerbaijan (13.10.2007) and Kazakhstan (17.10.2007). Pasanen and his national team mates will face Belgium in Brussels on Saturday before playing Spain in a friendly in Helsinki on Wednesday.

Daniel Jensen and Leon Andreasen have been nominated to join the Danish national team who will likely have their last chance to qualify for Euro 2008. A win against Spain on Saturday (13.10.2007) and then against Latvia on Wednesday would surely give Denmark the necessary shove they need to get out of fourth spot (14 points) and get within touching distance of the Iberians. The Spaniards, on 19 points, are currently adrift of Sweden with Markus Rosenberg. The Werder striker will travel to Vaduz with the Swede’s to take on Liechtenstein and then face Northern Ireland in Solna four days later. Two wins would see Sweden join Germany in the tournament finals next year.

Non-Euro 2008 internationals

Whilst the others sweat to secure a place in the finals, the host nations will come face-to-face in a friendly match on Saturday. The Austrians will also play the Ivory Coast in a friendly on Wednesday 17.10.2007 which will see the Werder strikers Boubacar Sanogo and Martin Harnik on opposite sides. The Ivory Coast will travel to Spain to take on a Catalan selection in Barcelona on Sunday, 14.10.2007.

Diego and Naldo are currently in Rio de Janeiro with the Brazilian national team preparing for the World Cup in 2010. Qualifying for the tournament begins for the Brazilians on Sunday, 14.10.2007 against Colombia in Bogota. Three days later, Carlos Dunga’s men will take on Ecuador in Rio.
