Werder Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf was full of praise for striker Ivan Klasnic on Thursday afternoon. The front man, who returned to team training a week ago under the watchful eye of a massive press turnout after his kidney transplant operations, has obviously impressed the trainer since returning: “At the moment I’m just focusing on his movement and how he is dealing with doing what I ask of him. I have to say that it looks quite good”, explained Schaaf and continued: “Apparently his body is coping with the strain of training with the team once a day. We can build on that and up the load bit by bit.”

Schaaf was also careful that his praise was correctly interpreted. The Croatian is still quite some way from making a Bundesliga comeback: “We can’t put the strain of top flight football on him just yet. We have discussed that point with the medical department and we are happy as to how things are developing.”

The 27 year old is delighted about the positive feedback: “It’s true, the first week has gone well for me. I am making a real effort and the others have honoured that”, explained Klasnic, who accepts the training dose allowed by Thomas Schaaf: “I know he’s being a little bit more careful with me. I have also pulled out of the odd game or been used as a free man in other exercises. I’ve noticed myself that I’ve been away for a few months. I really feel each session in my legs and I have the feeling I need to be massaged for longer. All in all though, I’m just happy to be out there on the pitch with my colleagues every day.”

In the long term the striker has much higher goals set for himself: “My next goal is to be a candidate for the 18 man squad – I’ve got my eye on a place there.”
