The piece of paper containing the Werder Bremen squad for their Champions League clash with Olympiakos Piräus was hot property on Tuesday evening. There it stood, in black and white, following long term injuries both Torsten Frings and Tim Borowski are fit and in the squad. The German international duo are ready to return having only very recently returned to full team training – a surprise that no Werder fan could have reckoned with a week ago.

Frings is hopeful of even more: “I always want to play as soon as I feel fit and when I train, then I’m fit.” The German international is certainly not lacking in self confidence: “We need to dominate the game and put our opponents under pressure. Then we’ll get our goal.” Tim Borowski could well help here too. Following the final training session he said: “I have come through the complete session and I feel good.”

The list with the Werder squad had a number of surprises on offer along with the news that coach Thomas Schaaf would be able to call upon striker Boubacar Sanogo. The Ivory Coast international, who had to be replaced at half time in the Armenia Bielefeld match with adductor muscle problems, looked likely to miss the UEFA Champions League tie but, having reduced training to light jogging on Tuesday, the front man was given the green light which means the extremely effective strike duo of Sanogo / Almeida (seven goals in the last three games) can be united again.

But, as so often has been the case for the Green-Whites this season, good news has been followed by less positive news: “We will definitely be without Tim Wiese”, announced Thomas Schaaf after Tuesday’s training session. The goalkeeper has been suffering from a thigh problem since the Armenia Bielefeld game at the weekend and so reserve keeper Christian Vander will step into the limelight: “He is a very capable replacement”, remarked Schaaf who was joined by Vander’s team mates in his opinion. “I know I can put 100% fate in him”, said Per Mertesacker and Clemens Fritz added: “We always have a good keeper, no matter which one of them plays.”

Vander himself is very level headed about his roll: “Floodlights, Champions League – of course I’m looking forward to the game.” The keeper went on in typically modest fashion: “Bundesliga or Champions League, it’s all the same to me. I’ve got to save everything that comes at my goal.”
