Werdr Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf put the best question to himself today when he quizzed: „Does it make sense, to put in al player who has been out with injury for so long?” The man in question is Tosten Frings, who returned to team training on Sunday and came through with no problems and joined his team again on Monday. The German international feels he would be ready to play on Wednesday night: “I have absolutely no pain and I could stick out a full 90 minutes. During rehabilitation I wasn’t just twiddling my thumbs “, explained the midfield man.

The Green-Whites coach is not yet ready to make a final decision: “We’ll wait until tomorrow to see before we can give a concrete answer to the Frings question.” Werder’s midfield engine, who injured knee ligaments during pre-season preparations, has only trained with the team twice since 24.07.2007.

The fact that Diego was not involved in team training on Monday and set out himself on a light jog was down to a slight thigh problem which had been causing him some problems during the previous week. Schaaf expects his Brazilian playmaker to be back in team training by Tuesday. Aside from the tricky South American, Schaaf has also had to do without Jurica Vranjes who fell awkwardly and hurt his back against Bielefeld. The Croatian joined Diego for a run on Monday and hopes to accompany him to team training on Tuesday.

There are still questions hanging over the availability of Tim Wiese, Boubacar Sanogo and Tim Borowski for the Champions League clash on Wednesday. All three went through treatment on Monday morning. Schaaf said: “All of them are showing signs of recovery but it is not clear if they can play or not. We’ll have to wait and see what happens.”

Should Tim Wiese have to miss out on the game, Christian Vander is waiting in the wings to replace him. No reason to worry in Schaaf’s opinion: “He has shown what he is capable of when we need him. Of course he hasn’t got much match practice but that’s the same for every reserve keeper in the Bundesliga. Believe me though, we are ready for every eventuality.”
