Werder, that was simply phenomenal!! Thanks to a stunning performance from the first to the last minute on the eighth match day of the season, Werder steam-rolled Armenia Bielefeld to run out 8:1 winners. Peter Niemeyer opened the scoring after 17 minutes with a strike from 16 meters. In the 35th minute, Hugo Almeida doubled the Green-Whites lead , heading home from a Boubocar Sanogo delivery. Artur Wichniarek reduced the deficit two minutes later but a brace from Sanogo before the break boosted Werder’s confidence and after the break Thomas Schaaf’s men stepped up a gear and tortured their guests. On the hour Per Mertesacker got on the score sheet and six minutes later, substitute Markus Rosenberg joined him. With five minutes to go, Diego converted a free kick and three minutes later, Hugo Almeida struck again to make the final score 8:1 – a result much to the pleasure of the bulk of the 40,120 fans at the Weser Stadium.
Trainer Thomas Schaaf made one change to the eleven which started against VfL Wolfsburg on Tuesday evening with Peter Niemeyer getting the nod ahead of Martin Harnik on the right side of the midfield.
After an early ‘feeler’ phase, it was the guests from West Phalia who had the first sight of goal with a set piece. André Mijatovic got on the end of a Jörg Böhme free kick but lacked precision (8’). The Bremen midfield had problems getting a grip on the game in the opening quarter hour against a tightly packed Bielefeld side who opted to try a tactic of feeding their strikers with long balls.
Niemeyer breaks the deadlock
It took until the 17th minute until the home team could finally break down their opponents thanks to a wonderful strike by Peter Niemeyer. The 23 year old got on the end of a poor clearing header by Bernd Korzynietz and hammered into the right corner from the edge of the boy to make it 1:0.
The goal seemed to give Werder the extra push they were lacking and the Bremen side increased the tempo to really pressurise Bielefeld. Almeida could have doubled the Green-Whites lead as he latched on to a Diego pass but the Portuguese international shot high with his weaker right foot (19’). Three minutes later Per Mertesacker came agonisingly close with a double header but the vice-vice-captain had his effort stopped on (or maybe over) the line.
Shortly afterwards there was a scary moment for both clubs as Peter Niemeyer clashed with André Mijatovic but it was the Bremen man who came off worst and the Bremen goal scorer couldn’t continue and had to be replaced by Clemens Fritz whilst Armenia had to make a change too with Jonas Kemper coming for Mijatovic. There wasn’t much change in the flow of play though with the home side totally dominating play and Rüdiger Kauf had to stop the ball on the line again to deny Sanogo (29’). Six minutes later, Werder finally got their well deserved second goal as Sanogo stole the ball from Matthias Langkamp and crossed to Almeida who nodded home to double the Werder lead – a wonderful combination between the two strikers.
Sonogo on the double
Almost immediately, Artur Wichniarek restored the one goal difference as he sprung the Werder offside trap to make it 2:1 from a dubiously illegal position but Dr. Markus Merk and his team failed to spot the offence. The home side didn’t take long to get over the decision and again capitalised on Armenia mistakes to overrun their guests. Boubacar Sanogo struck twice before the break to make it 4.1 with two goals from Diego delivery’s.
Goals aplenty at the Weser Stadium
At the break, the Ivory Coast international had to remain on the treatment table with a groin problem and Swede Markus Rosenberg was introduced. The new striker joined in where his side had left off, penning the Armenia players back into their own half on a permanent basis. Mathias Hain had to watch attack upon attack roll towards his goal and soon the keeper found himself plucking the ball out of his net again as Mertesacker rose to head home a Diego corner (59’). Substitute Rosenberg got in on the act seven minutes later, scoring with a shot from the edge of the box to make it 6:1(66’).
Bremen were now firing on all cylinders and Bielefeld could do little more than attempt to avoid a total disaster. At that stage, the home side took their foot off the gas and allowed Armenia some breathing space. Tim Wiese had to be treated for a thigh injury but the keeper was fit to continue.
Werder make it eight
The fans were now in the mood for action and ‘Mexican Waves’ floated around the stadium as they bayed for another goal to celebrate – and they got more!! Diego, who was once again in stunning form and created three goals got in on the scoring himself, bending in a free kick with five minutes to go and three minutes later Hugo Almeida struck again to make it eight, converting after sme good work by Rosenberg.
Werder didn’t just win the game but equalled the clubs record home win of 8:1 against Kickers Offenbach back in 1983 – Simply phenomenal.
