Two goals in training, a good humoured laught and a smile here an there, the odd difference of opinion with the referee. Ivan Klasnic completed his first team training with his colleagues as if he’d never been away: “It was a bit quieter here while he was away”, joked Tim Borowski who was delighted about the return of his team mate. The Werder players welcomed Klasnic back with open arms. The striker had a personal word and a joke for almost everyone of the players during the 90 minute session: “A few knew that I’d be back in training again this week but most found that out on the pitch for the first time. It was great to back with the lads again and everyone really enjoyed themselves”, explained Klasnic who received the word on Thursday morning that all formalities had been completed and he could get going again.

Ivan Klasnic was all too happy to get back to a normal working day: “It was a good training session, shooting practice and a kick-about. I was so happy to be able to train with a few others and as you could see, I haven’t forgotten how to play football”, stated Klasnic, who was somewhat taken aback by the huge media presence at training.

Physically the Croatian striker dealt with the strain very well: “I had a few stomach problems, I didn’t really eat much today and I was lacking a little energy. As soon as I get home I’ll eat something.” Klasnic will need plenty of energy in the coming weeks. After as short a period as possible the striker wants to get back into the first team: “I am part of the team but I can’t help out at the moment – I’ll get there though. I want to get that feeling back that you have as a Bundesliga player.”

With that in mind, the 27 year old is taking an amount of risk: “Of course something could happen but my kidneys are well protected by my protective belt and my stomach muscles. If a players ploughs into the back of another player he could damage those kidneys too.” The Croatian appears to have come through the whole issue very well: “Of course it wasn’t easy. It was a nine month period of suffering which I wouldn’t wish on anyone. My family were very important during that time. “Now when I sit at home I don’t even think about the fact that I was ill. Only the medicine I take mornings and evenings, as well as the scar, remind me of that.”
