Probably the best piece of news that the Werder fans will hear today came before their sides match against VfB Stuttgart even started.

Probably the best piece of news that the Werder fans will hear today came before their sides match against VfB Stuttgart even started. General manager Klaus Alofs announced that midfield playmaker Diego had signed a contract extension with the club until 30.06.2011 – an extra year added to his current deal.

Allofs said: “The contract extension shows just what Werder Bremen and Diego think of the rumours of a transfer that raise their ugly heads again and again. The new deal is proof of how we wish to work with him over a long time period. We are in a good position to do that now.”

Diego himself commented directly to WERDER.DE on his arrival at the Weser Stadium on Saturday afternoon: “I’m delighted to have extended my contract here. I felt quite at home in Bremen very quickly – in every possible way. The best thing is that the positive feeling is constantly increasing. I have the opportunity to play football successfully here.”

Diego arrived in Bremen from FC Porto in the summer of 2005 and very quickly developed in to a vital element and a favourite with the fans. His record at the club can only be bested by the flamboyant style of football the Brazilian international plays. In 33 Bundesliga games he has scored 13 and made 14 goals. He was voted ‘Player of the Month’ on three occasions (August, October and December) and with his goals against FC Bayern Munich (21.10.2006) and Alemannia Aachen (20.04.2007) he has twice picked up the goal of the month award.
