Almost an hour behind schedule, Werder bremen touched down at Bremen Airport on Wednesday. The planed eventually landed at 2:32pm. There was plenty of baggage on board but unfortunately no points the day after a hard fought battle in Madrid – but there was no reason not to be optimistic: “With performances like this it is very possible to progress in the Champions League”, remarked Naldo who pretty much spoke for the whole Werder team when he looked back on his sides performance at the ‘Estadio Santiago Bernabeu’. “It is vitally important now that we win our home games against Piräus and Lazio. We must concentrate on that now and we can set ourselves up with two back-to-back home games. That is the advantage of the schedule that we must use to our advantage”, explained Per Mertesacker

It will certainly be no easy task warned Thomas Schaaf: “Lazio haven’t been able to present themselves or make an impact internationally in recent years but nationally they are always there or there abouts. There is nothing left to be said about constant Greek champions Olympiakos Piräus”, said Schaaf who didn’t see need to comment on the 1:1 draw between his other group opponents in Group C: “The other game is unimportant for us. We have to focus on ourselves.”

The difficulty of the challenge is clear to the team now at the very latest. Goal getter Boubacar Sanogo made his respect for the Greeks and the Italians very clear: “It will be a hell of a battle with the other two sides for second place”. The Ivory Coast international is hoping for more goals in Europe’s top flight: “A goal in the Champions League is always very special, and then against Real Madrid – that’s very good for my self confidence and that’s where I plan to continue.”

The fact that the levels of confidence are on the rise throughout the whole team were not only made clear by the striker but also by goalkeeper Tim Wiese: “If we continue to play like that then I’m quite optimistic about the next few weeks”. General manager Klaus Allofs added: “We may not have any points at the moment but we still have a good chance to finish the group in second place. There are still five games to go in which to gather points.”
