On Friday, having passed a fitness test, Sebastian Boenisch signed a contract with Werder Bremen. Having dotted the ‘i’s’ and crossed the ‘t’s’, the new Werder man gave his first interview as a Green-White to WERDER.DE.
Why did you chose to move to Bremen?
“I think that Bremen have proven in recent years that they work very well with good, young players. They’ve been very successful in recent years. I’m really looking forward to the task and I will do all in my power to strengthen the team.”
What do you think of the Werder Champions League group? With Schalke you would have had very different opponents. Are you looking forward to facing a massive club like Real Madrid?
“Yes. Of course you are always delighted when you have the chance to play against teams such a Real Madrid but I think in the Champions League every game is an interesting one no matter who you are playing against. Qualifying is super in itself and I had my fingers crossed all the way through the game on Wednesday – for the sake of the club naturally.”
Did Werder’s qualification for the Champions League play any roll in your decision to make the move to Bremen?
“Yes, it was one point. The club Werder Bremen were a puller for me whether they were in the Champions League or not. Qualifying is super in itself and I had my fingers crossed all the way through the game on Wednesday – for the sake of the club naturally.”
Which of your new team mates are you most looking forward to playing with?
“I’m looking forward to working with the whole team but players such as Diego and Per Mertesacker are really quite special. Still I’m looking forward to the whole team and I can surely learn a lot.”
What have been your first impressions of Bremen? Do you think you will make yourself at home here quickly?
“I was greeted here with open arms, everyone was very welcoming to me. Bremen is a beautiful city and I think I will find my feet here without problems.”
