There wasn’t much action on the trainings pitches around the Weser Stadium today. Absentees due to international duty and the large number of injured players at the club left trainer Thomas Schaaf with just seven first team players to train with including Tim Wiese, Peter Niemeyer, Christian Schulz, Christian Vander, Frank Baumann, Hugo Almeida and Carlos Alberto. The new signing from Brazil was unable to complete the entire session. “Carlos was feeling light-headed. He had some tests but the results haven’t returned yet. We’ll have to wait and see how he is tomorrow”, explained Schaaf.

There was bad news from Boubacar Sanogo too. The 24 year old striker was due to play for the Ivory Coast in a friendly against Egypt in Paris but was forced to pull out at short notice with a foot injury: “He is currently receiving treatment and as yet it is unclear as to whether he will be fit to play against Nuremberg on Saturday”, commented a sceptical trainer.

There are nine Werder players away with their respective national teams at the moment. Aside from Per Mertesacker, who is expected to start for Germany against England at Wembley Stadium on Wednesday, Daniel Jensen is in the Danish squad for their friendly against Ireland in Aarhus. Markus Rosenberg is in Göteborg for Sweden’s clash with USA, Diego and Naldo are on duty for Brazil who will play a friendly international against Algeria in Montpellier. New signing Dusko Tosic is in Brussels for Serbia and Montenegro’s match against Belgium. Jurica Vranjes is in the Croatian selection to play Bosnia-Herzagovina in Sarajevo whilst Petri Pasanen will likely captain Finland when they take on Kazachstan in Helsinki and Martin Harnik has been called into the Austrian first team for their game against Czech Republic. Hugo Almeida has remained in Bremen to train considering his suspension which will keep him out of Portugal’s game in Armenia.

Torsten Frings (cruciate damage), Tim Borowski (ligament injury), Leon Andreasen (calf problem), Patrick Owomoyela (thigh injury), Aaron Hunt (Knee problem) and Ivan Klasnic (kidney transplant) are all still out of the reckoning. Clemens Fritz (stomach muscle strain) and Pierre Wome (groin-operation) undertook some light jogging on Tuesday with Physio Stefan Wolters.

This season’s young hopeful, Kevin Schindler is currently training with the ‚U23‘ team where he will also feature on Wednesday evening against 1. FC Magdeburg in the ‘Regionalliga’.
