Werder Bremen lost their first home game of the 2007/2008 season 0:4 (0:1) against FC Bayern Munich.

Werder Bremen lost their first home game of the 2007/2008 season 0:4 (0:1) against FC Bayern Munich. The visitors took a somewhat fortunate lead in an evenly matched first period as Francy Ribéry converted a penalty after Luca Toni went down under a challenge from Petri Pasanen (31’). Bayern’s second came just after the break as Toni finished off a quick break by the visitors (51’). Bayern then controlled the match at their want and substitute Hamit Altintop made it 0:3 with ten minutes to go. Andreas Ottl finished the scoring in the 87th minute with a well placed long distance drive.

Werder trainer Thomas Schaaf made three changes to the side which beat Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League qualifier in mid-week. In the midfield, Jurica Vranjes and Daniel Jensen replaced Carlos Alberto and the injured Leon Andreasen. Up front Hugo Almeida got the nod ahead of Kevin Schindler.

Naldo takes on Klose

42,100 spectators packed into the Weser Stadium for a North vs. South summit that had gained more and more in importance in recent weeks. At the centre of attention was ex-Bremen and new-Munich man Miroslav Klose who was officially bid farewell by Werder manager Klaus Allofs and chairman Jürgen L. Born before the match. Very early on in the match, Naldo let Klose know he was now an opponent with a heavy tackle after just three minutes which cost the Brazilian a yellow card.

Emotions were running high from early on in the game with both teams opting for an attacking and aggressive approach in what was bound to be an intense affair. The Green-Whites held of the strong favourites and played some nice combination football at times but the game was punctuated often by poor passing.

First chance for Sanogo

It was the Green-Whites who were to create the first real chance of the match. An impressive Jurica Vranjes sent Boubacar Sanogo on his way but Bayern keeper Oliver Kahn got down quickly to save the Ivory Coast internationals effort (10’).

With a quarter hour played, the tension on both the pitch and on the terraces quietened somewhat. Both sides cancelled each other out whilst the game itself failed to suffer due to the situation. Chances on goal were unfortunately few and far between with both defences doing their respective jobs very well. Werder attempted to work through the centre with Diego but the middle of the park was fairly congested and the Brazilian was left with little room to manouver. On the right, Petri Pasanen had taken for a very defensive roll whilst on the left, Christian Schulz attempted to push forward more, without producing too much though.

Bayern take a shock lead

With a half hour on the clock, it was the visitors who took something of a surprise lead. Just inside the box, Luca Toni became caught up by the legs of Pasanen and referee Markus Merk spotted a foul and awarded a penalty to the visitors. Franck Ribéry stepped up and chipped the ball coolly int the centre of the goal, anticipating Wieses’s dive.

The visitors played out the remainder of the first period cleverly despite the hosts having more of the play. Werder could only cause problems from a free kick which Hugo Almeida initially hammered into the wall but from the rebound, Pasanen hit a venomous shot which missed the Bayern goal by mere centimetres (44’).

Toni sets up the visitors

During the half time break, the Munich side were forced to replace Miroslav Klose, who’d aken a knock, with new signing Hamit Altintop and the Turkish international had an almost immediate effect. From a Werder corner, Schulz unwillingly played the ball to the new man and Bayern struck with a lightening counter attack. Altintop pulled out wide to the right before passing back into the centre where Luca Toni took on the ball and shot past Wiese to make it 0:2 (51’).

It was a decisive goal! Werder and their fans were stunned by the strike and the visitors took over proceedings. Thomas Schaaf attempted to breathe new life into his crumbling attack and introduced Kevin Schindler and Carlos Alberto for Almeida and Vranjes but the fresh legs could do little to stop the Bayern onslaught.

Werder with no answer

Bayern were now in auto-mode and the Green-Whites were left looking on in awe. In particular, Franck Ribéry impressed with a fantastic piece of skill to foil Schulz and set up his sides third. Throug Toni, the ball found its way to Altintop who was free on the right and could pick his spot to beat Tim Wiese and make it 0:3 (79’). The Werder keeper produced a fantastic save to deny Lucio in the 85th minute but he could do nothing to stop substitute Andreas Ottl’s effort which nestled in the top right had corner, well out of the keeper’s reach. 0:4 (87’).

Werder had long since thrown in the towel and just watched on as Bayern Munich went on to produce the most emphatic win in Bremen in the clubs history. Day to remember for the visitors and their supporters and one which Werder will wish to put behind them as quickly as possible.
