In the second round of the DFB Cup, Werder Bremen and the Werder reserves have both drawn home ties. During Sunday evenings draw, the 25 time German international Annike Krahn (Duisburg) drew newly promoted Bundesliga side MSV Duisburg against Werders first team. The Green-Whites reserves from the ‘Regionalliga’, who have home advantage as a third division side, are to pit their abilities against second division FC St. Pauli from Hamburg.
Werder’s clash with MSV Duisburg will see an old favourite back on the Weser as Ailton signed to the ‘Zebra’s’ this summer. Trainer Thomas Schaaf doesn’t see that particular fact as a major issue: “It was clear that he’d get the chance to come and display his talents here at least once this season. Now he will have the chance in the DFB Cup too. Of course, we’re looking forward to seeing him.” The trainer considers the tie a very interesting one: “You’ve only got to put on the television tonight to get an idea of what the MSV team are capable of. They’ve made a good start to the season and will have the wind in their sails when they come to Bremen. It’s no easy task”, said Thomas Schaaf after noting their 3:1 away win in Dortmund.
Captain Frank Baumann, one of the few players in the Werder team who will have played along with Ailton, is also looking forward to seeing his old team-mate again: “Ailton may have gotten a little older but he will create a few highlights during this season, I’m quite sure of that. That’s shouldn’t happen at the Weser Stadium though.” Baumann is in total agreement with his coach about the respect that Duisburg deserve: “They came very close to topping the table today, that says it all.” The Werder veteran has no doubt that his side should be able to progress to the next round of the cup: “We want to get to Berlin so we will have to take this hurdle too. It’s nice to be playing a cup match at the Werser Stadium.”
