As Werder Bremen players took to the trainings pitch on Monday afternoon, new signing Dusko Tosic joined them for the first time. The 22 year old defender completed the entire session and was able to gather some initial impressions of what things are like with his new team. Almost consistently by his side, Croatian international Jurica Vranjes who doubled as official translator: “I’m happy to be able to help him, especially with the language but with the complete integration period. He’s a good lad and I’m happy to do it”, explained Vranjes.

Tosic himself seemed to be very much enjoying his new surroundings: “I noticed the good atmosphere straight away. Werder is, alongside Bayern Munich, the best club in Germany. I know about their successes in 2004 and would like to achieve as much as possible with the club. I made a good decision coming here.”

Not completely without influence upon his decision was fellow countryman Mladen Krstajic. The defender played in Bremen between 2001 and 2004 before moving to current club FC Schalke 04: “I spoke to him a lot on the telephone and he ensured me that Werder Bremen is a super club. I liked what I heard which influenced my transfer to the club”, admitted Tosic.

The defender could well be involved in the Green-Whites friendly match on Tuesday evening against Esbjerg fB in Denmark. The new man is not at all worried about being thrown in at the deep end: “I’m fit and ready to play 90 minutes and if the trainer picks me, I’ll be ready”, declared the confident young Serbian international. When questioned about his strengths, Tosic let actions speak louder than words: “I don’t wish to talk about that, I want to show my abilities. Then the fans can make their own picture of what my strengths are.” The defender also promised: “I’m going to learn to speak German as quickly as possible.”

Despite all the excitement, the autograph hunters at the trainings pitch sorely missed two particular favourites. Diego and Naldo were both absent from training on Monday: “Both ae carrying slight knocks and will not be involved against Esbjerg on Tuesday”, explained Thomas Schaaf.

Another absentee on Tuesday will be Danish international Leon Andreasen who is still recovering from a calf problem: “I trained with the ball this morning and can do everything but I don’t want to push it. I hope to be able to return to team training on Wednesday”, said Andreasen, who went on to comment on Esbjerg fB: “They haven’t got a bad team. They are real battlers and have some talented individuals in their squad. It won’t be easy.”

The following players will make up the Werder squad for the trip to Denmark:

Wiese, Vander, Niemeyer, Mertesacker, Tosic, Vranjes, Schulz, Jensen, Borowski, Alberto, Sanogo, Rosenberg, Artmann, Schindler, Stallbaum, Kruse, Hessel, Löning, Theuerkauf, Harnik.
