With five days to go before the start of the Bundesliga season, Werder Bremen have added to their squad. On Monday, the Serbian international Dusko Tosic signed a four year contract with the Green-Whites. General manager Klaus Allofs presented the 22 year old defender, who was signed from French first division side FC Sochaux, with the number 13 jersey. Tosic passed the Werder medical last week and served up a light training session with his new colleagues on Sunday. The new man will officially join up for full team training on Monday afternoon. The fee involved in the transfer has been kept under wraps.
After announcing the signing, Klaus Allfs said: “We are delighted to have gotten a strong tackling, pacy and versatile player, with international experience, under contract. I think he will fit in here with us very quickly.”
Trainer Thomas Schaaf commented: “With the signing of Dusko Tosic we are strengthening our squad with a young, dynamic man who has come to the forefront both for FC Sochaux and the Serbian national side. He was notable at the U21 European Championships too.”
For Dusko Tosic, signing to Werder Bremen is something very special: “I made a very conscious decision to sign for Werder because I am convinced that I can develop further here and make a giant step forward in my career. I intend to slot in here quickly by way of thanking Werder for the fate they have put in me. I’d like to play as many games as possible, challenge for the German championship and cause a stir in the Champions League with my new colleagues.”
Tosic, who could, and is expected to, make his Werder debut in Tuesday evenings friendly against Danish first division side Esbjerg FB, first made the footballing world sit up and take notice as an OFK Belgrade player. On January 1st 2006 he made the move to FC Sochaux where he quickly secured a first team spot. During his time in France he made 40 appearances for Sochaux and scored one goal. In March 2007 he made his international debut for Serbia and has played in European qualifiers against Kazachstan (1:2, 24.03.2007) and Portugal (1:1, 28.03.2007). In July 2007 he came runner up with Serbia in the U21 European Championships. His greatest success to date was in May 2007 as he won the French cup with FC Sochaux.
