Werder Bremen have progressed to the second round of the DFB Cup, but only just. Thomas Schaaf’s men had no easy job on Saturday afternoon in Braunschweig but eventually beat Eintracht 1:0 thanks to a goal from new signing Boubacar Sanogo in the 90th minute.

Thomas Schaaf made two changes to the eleven which started against FC Everton with Peter Niemeyer and Daniel Jensen replacing the injured Clemens Fritz and Frank Baumann.

Determined Braunschweig start brightly

In what was to develop into a physically taxing tie, it was the home side who made the better start. The ‘Regionalliga’ side showed little fear of or respect for their Bundesliga opponents and created some good early chances. Jan Washausen attempted to shock Werder with a drive from 16 meters out but proved well off the mark (8’) but just a minute later he was at it again and this time from all of 25 meters with a shot that whipped just over the crossbar. At the other end, Bremen were lacking in precision and all that they produced was a long ball from Boubacar Sanogo toward Tim Borowski which landed safely in the arms of Eintracht keeper Jasmin Fejzic. The Green-Whites first corner was distinctly more dangerous. Diego swung the ball to the back post and found Per Mertesacker who headed across to Sanogo. The new signing from HSV in turn headed on to Markus Rosenberg but the Swede, under pressure from Horacek was unable to convert from two meters out (21).

When opportunity allowed, Eintacht attempted to get the ball forward as quickly as possible. One of these fast breaks could only be stopped by Mertesacker making a foul in the centre of the park for which the German international saw yellow (28’). Tim Dannenberg (32’) and Martin Horacek (36’) both had chances to put the home team in front and before the break Werder were very lucky not to go behind. A long ball from Sebastian Gundelach found ex-Werder man Holger Wehlage out on the right. The midfielder burst to the by-line and then drove the ball across a crowded box where Tim Wiese bravely flung himself in amongst the flying feet to cover the danger and avoid an embarrassing blow.

Werder reduced to ten men / Schindler lightens things up

Werder made a nightmare start to the second half as Washausen broke forward and Mertesacker could only foul again to stop him (47’). Referee Manuel Gräfe was left with no choice but to produce a second yellow and send the lofty defender for an early shower. The numerical disadvantage was hardly noticeable though as Werder began to raise their game and the introduction of Kevin Schindler offered new hope. Just minutes on the pitch, Werders young striking talent broke into the Eintracht box and his effort could only be stopped by the heroics of Fejzic who turned the ball over for a corner (49’). From the corner Niemeyer got a header in but never really threatened to score. Werder kept the pressure on and from a Schindler cross, Borowski met the ball on the volley but drove his shot wide of the mark (51’) before Naldo again tested the Braunschweig keeper (55’).

The fans, in a capacity filled stadium saw an entertaining match with openings at both ends and the play swinging back and forth at an impressive pace. Naldo had to be alert to block a shot from Tim Dannenberg and from the rebound Sreto Ristic couldn’t get his shot on target (64’). Directly on the break Schindler attempted to out-smart the Braunschweig keeper with a lob that landed on the top of the goal (64’). At the far end of the pitch both Gundelach (66’) and Washausen (72’) had chances to break the dead-lock whilst Borowski could have also done so for Werder (69’).

Sanogo sends Werder marching on

The closing phase of the game was to be a turbulent one. Within a minute both teams could have taken the lead. Schindler should have converted a Jurica Vranjes pass and at the other end, Benjamin Fuchs had only Wiese to beat but the keeper held his ground, forcing Fuchs to rush his shot and put it wide of the upright (79’). Wiese was involved again in the 84th minute as Dannenberg broke forward. Naldo sprinted back to get a foot on the ball and in doing so tested his own keeper who made a tremendous save under the circumstances.

The crowd in the stadium had already begun to prepare for extra time when Werder eventually got through. In the final minute of the game, Niemeyer sent a long ball towards Sanogo who took on the pass and slotted home to wreck the dreams of the Eintracht faithful. A bitter end for the home team but a vital step for Werder as the season gets underway.
