On Tuesday evening at Goodison Park in Liverpool, Werder Bremen played out a respectable 2:2 (0:0) draw against FC Everton. The Green-Whites twice took the lead on the night, in front of a 20,000 strong crowd, through Boubacar Sanogo (55’) and Per Mertesacker (85’) but twice found themselves back on level terms thanks to goals from James McFadden (76’) and Anderson Silva (89’)

Alberto and Diego together at last

Werder’s friendly against Everton was the first chance for Naldo and Diego to participate actively in the pre-season preparations and the fans in Liverpool got to see Diego and new signing Carlos Alberto join forces in the Werder midfield. Within the first minute the Brazilian duo showed just what they are capable of as they combined with a one-two to cut through the Everton midfield. Diego then laid off wide to Christian Schulz on the left who crossed to find Alberto whose subsequent pass proved too deep for Diego and Tim Howard in the Everton goal could gather easily.

The Green-Whites set out their stall early on and pushed forward at every opportunity during the early phases of the game but the first real opening fell to the hosts. On ten minutes, the ball dropped to the feet of Phil Neville, who was able to shoot unchallenged but luckily for the visitors, Tim Wiese reacted quickly to save the ball on the goal line.

Hosts gain the upper hand in tough first half

It was very clear that Werder were determined to make good again after four games on the trot without a win. The put the fight up to a physically strong Everton side and gave as good as they got in often heftily fought tackles. The German side were unable to stem the flow of their English Premier League hosts as they turned up the pressure. Again and again, Mikel Arteta threatened and caused problems in the Werder half. His effort from 17 meters out was luckily deflected away (16’) and two minutes later he could only be stopped by a foul from Frank Baumann. Arteta himself too the resulting free-kick from 25 meters out which Weise was at a stretch to turn the low driven effort away for a corner.

There was little respite for Werder during this period. The ‘Blues’ looked comfortable on the ball and the number of chances increased too. Tim Cahill came close with a header (26’), before Nuno Valente hammered a shot wide of the up-right from all of 30 meters (29’). Thomas Schaaf’s team were very relieved not to fall behind before the half time break as Per Mertesacker just about managed the clear the danger from Victor Anichebe after a cross from Arteta (44’).

Werder take an unexpected lead

There was no real change of what the fans were offered at the start of the second period with the home side creating just as they had in the first half. Neville tried his luck with a shot from 18 meters (50’) before Andy Johnson sprinted to get on the end of a misplaced back-pass by Clemens Fritz. Wiese got to the ball just ahead of the Everton striker but then hit him with his attempted clearance and was very happy to see the ball trickle wide of his empty net (51’).

Just minutes later, Werder managed to find their first opening since the re-start and were extremely effective. Fritz and Diego combined and the German international powered forward to drive the ball across the box where new signing Boubacar Sanogo was on hand to score his second goal in his secnd game for Werder (55’).

The visitors now had the lead and the upper hand as the English side seemed to be feeling the effects of their constant attacking in the first half. It was then no real wonder that it was a fresh pair of legs, in the form of James McFadden, that would find an equaliser for the Evertonians. The Scot touched the ball home in the 76th minute to make it 1:1.

Hectic finish – Rosenberg blows his chance

The closing phase was again to be a hectic one. Wiese was called into action to make an impressive save from Anderson Silva (84’) and almost immediately at the other end, Werder took the lead yet again. From a corner on the left, Sanogo nodded on to Mertesacker who chested the ball over the line to make it 2:1 for the Green-Whites (85’). The visitors joy was short lived though as Everton again equalised, with a minute to go. After some good play at the edge of the box, Silva converted to put David Moyes team back on level terms (89’).

The very last chance of the game fell to Werder. Borowski put Markus Rosenberg through with a long ball forward from the half-way mark. The Swedish international got on the end of the pass but was unable to beat the advancing Tim Howard with his attempted lob.
