There were wide smiles and joyous faces all around as the Werder fans and players mingled. On the day there was little thought of disappointing results in pre-season or of the long list of injuries.

There were wide smiles and joyous faces all around as the Werder fans and players mingled. On the day there was little thought of disappointing results in pre-season or of the long list of injuries. The majority of the 30,000 supporters, who braved the rain to attend the ‘Day of the Fans’ at the Weser Stadium on Sunday, bunched closely together around the main stage to see their Green-White heroes be officially presented. Vice-captain Torsten Frings was the first to take the microphone and he had exactly the right words to fire up the gathered public: “Don’t take recent results so seriously. When the season begins we will prove just what we are capable of – then we’ll win our games.” Captain Frank Baumann had some promising words for the crowd: “We’ve been through a little crisis but we will overcome that. We are pulling together more now and we’ll make a successful start to the season.” Even trainer Thomas Schaaf was infected by the positive atmosphere and the optimism: “We’ll be in good form to start the season as long as we can avoid further injuries. At the moment it would appear as if we are currently using up our injury strain for the whole season. If that’s the case then soon we’ll be back on form and playing the kind of football that people have come to expect from Werder Bremen”, declared the coach.

Thomas Schaaf and Torsten Frings didn’t have just the Werder thirsty crowd behind them but also the amused fans as they met some questions with lightening tongued answers. As stadium announcer Arnd Zeigler asked Thomas Schaaf if the recent friendly results had put him in bad mood, Torsten Frings interrupted with the answer: “The trainer has been in bad mood for years now”, to which Schaaf snapped back : “Maybe it’s not so bad that ‘Lutscher’ is going to be out for a couple of months:”

Werder’s ever popular Brazilian contingent were also inspiring the emotions of the fans. Naldo and Diego are back in the fold having returned to Bremen after their ‘Copa America’ win and the Werder number ‘10’ announced how much he’s looking forward to working together with Carlos Alberto: “He’s a fantastic footballer, we’ve played some great games together.” The new signing took the microphone too and explained how his heroes are fellow countrymen Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Romario. The fans are also expecting a lot from Boubacar Sanogo who made the effort to greet the fans in German as he was met by rapturous applause.

During the earlier part of the morning, the board of management were also a popular group as Jürgen L. Born, Klaus Allofs, Klaus-Dieter Fischer and Manfred Müller opened a Werder talk-round and gave some insight as to what is happening at Werder currently with the topics of the stadium restructuring and the advantages of working with Citibank at the top of the list.
