Following their third pre-season friendly in preparing for the Bundesliga kick-off, Werder could make trip back to Bremen with a third clear win under their belts. At the Marschweg-Stadion, the Green-Whites beat fifth division VfL Oldenburg 6:0 (5:0) in front of a 9,000 strong crowd. The Werder goals were scored by Daniel Jensen (2), Frank Löning (2), Leon Andreasen and Markus Rosenberg. The Bndesliga sides comfortable win and respectable result was marred by a muscle injury picked up by Patrick Owomoyela which could see him out of action for several weeks.
Despite the strain of the recent trainings camp, Werder made a bright start to the match and sent up their first warning signal after just six minutes. From a Tim Borowski corner, the ball fell kindly to the feet of Daniel Jensen but keeper Thomas Wegmann was equal to the effort. Two mintes later the ball was in the net though as again Borowski and Jensen combined and the Dane needed only to roll the ball over the line to make it 1:0. Werder kept up the pressure on VfL and as Markus Rosenberg broke through, the keeper had only one option to prevent the Swede continuing his run – a foul - a penalty!! Jensen stepped up to claim his brace and make the score 2:0.
VfL down, but not out
VfL refused to roll over and accept their fate easily, showing signs of life themselves after fifteen minutes. Tim Steidten picked out Christian Brüntjen from a free-kick but the Oldenburg man’s headed effort cleared Wiese’s crossbar. At the other end, Pierre Womé laid the ball off to Leon Andreasen from a set piece and the Dane drove home to make it 3:0 (26’). Luckily for the Danish midfielder, the keeper saw the ball so late and was only able to turn it into his own goal.
Oldenburg attempted to make use of the little space that the Green-Whites allowed to create some chances of their own. On the half hour, Christian Claaßen turned to lash in a shot but couldn’t find the target. The Bundesliga side were much less wasteful with their chances. Womé swung in a corner and Frank Löning was on hand to turn the ball home to make it 4:0 (34’). Before the break, Rosenberg got to show just what he’s made of too as he collected a long ball from the midfield, danced past the VfL defence and buried past the keeper – 5:0.
VfL came out after the half time break with a more determined approach but it was again Werder who had the first chance of the half. Thomas Schaaf made an almost complete team switch for the second period and it was a cross from young hopeful Norman Theuerkauf that was met on the volley by Kevin Löning to give Werder their sixth of the night (51’). The fifth division side were not without their openings, Sebastian Ferruli found himself through on goal (54’), and Sebastian Schröer almost made an ominous burst down the right flank but neither could beat Christian Vander between the posts.
Werder shocked by Owomoyela injury
The crowd at the Marschweg-Stadion inhaled a shocked intake of breath in the 65th minute as Patrick Owomoyela lay injured on the ground after a short sprint. The full-back / midfield man got his boot caught in the grass and was stretchered off with a suspected muscle sinew tear. Due to a lack of options, Werder continued the match with ten men, which had a distinct effect on the flow of the game. Schaaf’s men slipped back a couple of gears and allowed their hosts to come at them but the only real test for Vander was a strong free-kick from Henrik Bemboom.
The game finished successfully again for the Bundesliga side – a 6:0 win this time, after a 7:2 win against TuS Pewsum and a 9:0 over the East Frisian XI. The up-coming tests for Werder are bound to be of a tougher nature with FC Basel (14.07.2007), FC Liverpool (17.07.2007) and FC Everton (31.07.2007) all waiting to test Thomas Schaaf’s men.
