On discussing the intesity of the trainings camp on Norderney, the Werder players are not exactly on in total agreement. Did trainer Thomas Schaaf up the programme this time around? Goalkeeper Tim Wiese believes he did: “I was here for the third time this year and I have the feeling that it gets to be a little more intense each year. This year everything seemed to be a bit longer – the jogs on the beach, the obstacle courses and the runs back to the hotel.”

Full back Clemens Fritz didn’t quite agree with his keeper: “It didn’t change much compared to last year. I actually have the feeling that we were one or two days longer on Norderney then”, remarked the German international. His colleague at both club and national level Tim Borowski said: “Every day that comes to an end here is a joy for the players”. But the number ‘24’ also knows there are plenty of advantages to take from the island: “By the end of this preparation we are definitely at 100%.”

On the ferry crossing on Sunday, Thomas Schaaf was playing his trainings programme cards close to his chest. On the subject of the intensity of the last few days, the coach commented: “We had a long holiday and now we have plenty to do and have to get to work. We need the fitness.” At the end of a tough week of training the coach had also lots of praise for his squad: “The team all pulled their weight and worked hard. The lads know what needs to be done and also that we are just at the beginning.”

Not even the horrendous weather conditions could dampen the ambitious programme of the Green-Whites. Schaaf was not very disturbed by the fact that the main pitch was partially waterlogged. “Of course we’d have preferred a little less water from above but we still able to serve up a complete programme on the ‘B’ pitch. The people here on the island know that they need to do something about this problem.” Another stay on the island is not initially in any real doubt and Schaaf sees the advantages here: “The climate, the hotel, the jogging routes and the surroundings here are correct. It’s always a good way to start preparations.”

His summary of the first few days in the trainings camp was somewhat doused by the number of injuries which lead to players not being in a position to continue the programme. Aaron Hunt (tooth operation) and Christian Schulz (back problem) both had to return to Bremen on Wednesday. Torsten Frings (knee problem) and Petri Pasanen (Achilles problem) both had to make the trip back on Sunday morning whilst Jurica Vranjes (ankle injury) and Kevin Artmann (groin strain) stayed to return with the rest of the squad but were unable to participate in Sunday’s friendly.

Thomas Schaaf will put together an extra training plan for the injured players. “I am still very hopeful that these players will be able to join us for the second trainings camp in Bad Ragaz. There we will dose out the training schedule for the individual players needs. Those who miss out now will have to expect to undergo a heightened programme.”

Thomas Schaaf is very positive about the time on Norderney on the whole. Three players in particular caught the trainers eye in a positive manner: “Leon got on very well. Max Kruse and Kevin Schindler also made us sit up and take notice. It’s a pity that that duo will be leaving us to go to the ‘Under 19’s’ national side on Tuesday.
