Werder Bremen brought their trainings camp on Norderney to a close with a second friendly win in just two days. In Leer-Loga, Thomas Schaaf’s men beat an East Frisian selection 9:0 (4:0). On target for the Green-Whites were Markus Rosenberg (2), Frank Baumann (2), Kevin Schindler, Daniel Jensen, Tim Borowski, Leon Andreasen and Frank Löning from the Under 23 side. The game at the SV Frisia Loga sport facility was watched by 8,311 fans.
East Frisian’s make an active start
Just after the kick-off, the East Frisian eleven, being coached by the duo of Werner Patorek and Casper Memering, created something of a stir. With their first move they forced the Green-Whites back and won the first corner of the game but couldn’t test Tim Wiese with the chance from the set piece. For the next ten minutes the mixed selection held their own and managed to defend their goal well but then the Bundesliga side stepped up the tempo and for the next 80 minutes the game flowed in only one direction. Pierre Womé tried his luck from distance and Markus Rosenberg came close with a header but after a quarter hour, the deadlock was broken. Max Kruse swung in a corner and Markus Rosenberg headed home to make it 1:0.
Werder now had their tales up and combined well to create chance after chance in very determined fashion. In the 20th minute it was then 2:0. Kruse played the ball into the box, where Rosenberg laid off to Tim Borowski who drove the ball home from twelve meters out. Ten minutes later Kruse was again involved in another fantastic move. From a one-two with Rosenberg the youngster played Kevin Schindler free and the young striker hammered in Werder’s third. Before the end of the first half, Markus Rosenberg grabbed his second as he collected a Borowski pass, rounded the goalkeeper and shoved the ball over the line to make the half-time score 4:0 (39’).
Impressive display despite tired legs
“We were a bit tired and burnt out after the tough trainings camp”, admitted goal scorer Kevin Schindler who was encouraged by the whole experience “All in all it was quite okay and I am satisfied with my performance.” The youngster was back on the field again for the second half of the game and continued to play his part in what was a very worth while event. In the 54th minute Schindler swung in a cross to the penalty spot from almost at the corner flag and Daniel Jensen took the ball perfectly on his chest before slotting past the keeper. Werder refused to let up and Jensen’s fellow countryman Leon Andreasen displayed another example of his recently discovered nose for goal. The Dane combined with Frank Löning before hammering home from twelve meters out (56’).
It was then a question of timing. Firstly Frank Löning was perfectly placed to head home following a goal mouth scramble (80’). Shortly afterwards, Frank Baumann got on the end of a Kruse corner, which was flicked on by Andreasen, to make it 8:0 from point blank range (84’). “Friendly games are a really nice change”, admitted the Werder captain after the match: “I enjoyed myself.” That was particularly true as the captain finished the scoring himself in the 86th minute with another header from a corner.
Now the challenges increase
Thomas Schaaf was very satisfied with the manner in which the first trainings camp in preparing for the 2007/2008 season was approached but saw room for improvement: “It was a nice afternoon, I think everyone enjoyed themselves. I has become clear to me though that we still have a lot of work to do. We did miss a number of chances.” Right full-back Clemens Fritz was very positive about the outcome: “We performed a lot better than we had against Pewsum. You could see that we are capable of combining better. We scored nine goals and didn’t concede any, that was important.” The up-coming challenges over the next few weeks will increase decidedly. The next tie will take place on Tuesday, 10.07.2007 against VfB Oldenburg before taking on Swiss runner-up FC Basel on Saturday, 14.07.2007.
