Werder’s press director Tino Polster has once again opted to present us with an intrusive look into the world of Werder Bremen. During the clubs training camp on Norderney, Polster will keep a diary of the events on the island and present them on www.werder.de. The latest Green-White news, detailed information and fun anecdotes surrounding Thomas Schaaf and his men will appear daily.

And so it ends! Werder Bremen now hold the spectator record for a football game on Norderney. Over 3,000 football fans gathered to watch the Green-Whites take on TuS Pewsum on Friday evening. Only FC Cologne managed to create similar interest as they arrived on the island ten years ago for the first ever trainings camp to take place here.
It was a festival of interest in particular for the children and youngsters who made up half of the watching crowd. It was to be the icing on the cake of a week which saw the team generate massive interest just by training. Although the game was not exactly a spectacle over long periods from the Werder point of view, the fans got to see seven goals for their money.
Naturally the volume as the amateur side got their two goals was decidedly louder and they received some well earned praise from Werder general manager Klaus Allofs for their efforts. ‘Man of the Match’ went understandably to a Pewsum player. Scorer of both goals Ingo Uckena is now the ‘Hero of Krummhörn’ – the holiday location close to Emden at the centre of Pewsum.
The condition of the Werder players is of course difficult to evaluate at the end of such a tough week of training at the beginning of preparations. Most impressive in my opinion was the manner in which young Kevin Schindler went about his task in the second half of the match. To add to that we saw a dynamic and determined Leon Andreasen burst again and again from the midfield to aid the strikers – fun to watch. The strain on the players since Monday did show. There is hardly a player who wouldn’t use the terms ‘Tired’ or ‘Burnt-Out’ to describe his current physical condition. The trainers, who are at it around the clock, too. Not involved in team training today were Petri Pasanen (achilles problem) and Torsten Frings, who decided to take things easy as he was feeling some pain in his knee. Both will miss out on tomorrows match against the East Frisian selection.
Even today, on the sixth day of training on the trot, Thomas Schaaf had a tough programme worked-out for his players – which of course included an early start. We were met at 7:20pm by a wicked downpour but, nonetheless, off we trooped. The coach had just a five kilometre route for the lads this morning, short by comparison. At 11am the breaks were off though and it was a full session on the pitch and the same again at 5pm. On Sunday morning, the final session on Norderney is planned for 9am. At midday we will then depart the wonderful Golf Hotel where we were once again treated wonderfully and always looked after. A huge thank you to the Hasbargen family and all of their staff.
I would personally love to come back here again next year despite the weather, I wouldn’t ask the players opinions at the moment though.
