Brazil secured second spot in Group B after beating Ecuador 1-0, with the goal scored by superstar Robiho. With the result, the Brazilians will clash with Chile, on Saturday, again in Puerto La Cruz, in the quarterfinals. In the first phase, both teams met, in Maturin, and Brazil defeated Chile 3-0.

On 3 minutes of play, Ecuador took the early initiative. Walter Ayoví took a free-kick and Doni made the save at his second attempt. Minutes later, keeper Marcelo Elizaga denied a Daniel Alves strike. On 13 minutes, after a cross from the left, Félix Borja nodded the ball over the crossbar. Two minutes later, Brazil made a carbon-copy move, with Júlio Baptista heading over after connecting with a Daniel Alves cross.

The first real chance occurred on 16 minutes. After a fine move by the Brazilian attack, left-back Gilberto supplied the cross and Vagner Love tried to score sliding in, but the Ecuadorian keeper made the save. On 25 minutes, Robinho struck after a 1-2 with Júlio Baptista, but missed the target.

Ecuador replied on 29 minutes, with Cristian Benítez. The striker struck from the edge of the box and Doni palmed the ball out. On 34 minutes, Júlio Baptista regained possession, broke deep and unleashed a piledriver. Keeper Elizaga spilled the ball and Vagner Love tried to make the most of the rebound, but the goalie managed to prevent the goal from happening.

The Brazilians set the agenda, but Ecuador were dangerous on the counter. On one counter-attack, on 37 minutes, they almost broke the deadlock. Borja received a long-ball, Doni left his area and was dribbled by the Ecuadorian, who shot towards the side of the net, to the relief of the Brazilian fans.

With their talented players, Brazil used their creativity to try to score. On 41 minutes, Robinho accepted a backheeler by Love, broke into the box, but the keeper sent the ball out. Before the whistle, the same Love made a wonderful move before striking powerfully. Elizaga didn’t hold the ball, and in the follow-up, Júlio Baptista forced Elizaga to a huge save from a header.

In the second half, both teams returned with the same lineups. On 50 minutes, Cristian Benítez met a cross with his head and Doni made the save. Three minutes later, Robinho received a pass on the right, dribbled inside the area before being tripped by Espinoza for a penalty. The player himself converted the spot-kick, on 55 minutes, to score his fourth goal in the Copa America.

On 67 minutes, Ecuador tried to tie the came through Walter Ayoví, who shot off target. Kleber replaced Gilberto and struck wide from distance. Until the final whistle, Ecuador tried to level the scores, but Brazil secured victory and their qualification.

Werder Bremen's Diego was introduced during the second period but had little effecct on the game whilst his club team mate Naldo again watched on from the bench.
