Clemens Fritz just couldn’t wait until 11:30. As soon as he arrived at the Weser Stadium on Monday, the full back went to view the new Werder jersey. The first reaction said it all. With a wry smile he said: “Now that’s exactly it. I really like the simplicity of it. When the printing is completed it will look almost regal.” The German international then headed off for his fitness test satisfied and looking forward to his first appearance in the new shirt.
Two hours later the general public got their first opportunity to feast their eyes on the new kits. Along with Ulrich Jordan, board member of Werder’s new sponsor ‘Citibank’, trainer Thomas Schaaf and Werder general manager Klaus Allofs a gigantic banner which hung next to the glass tower at the Weser Stadium was uncovered. The unveiling was met with much positive reaction from the gathering public: “We made a conscious decision to go for a straight forward and simple design. This shirt is another step back towards the old club tradition although we did maintain an element of orange again this time around”, explained Klaus Allofs and added: “The new collar design was met by the satisfaction of the players too. A ‘V-Neck’ is a lot more comfortable to wear.” Thomas Schaaf continued the praise of the new jerseys: “I like it but now it’s all about making sure we play well when we’re wearing it.” Sponsor representative Jordan is convinced that the new shirts will suit both the players and the ‘Citibank’ logo.
The new Werder ‘Event’ shirt also caused a bit of a stir which this time around is, just like the new trainings kits, in a very modern, olive green, military look – as did the colourful choices for the goalkeepers. The new jerseys will be available from the fan shop and sport outlets from July 9th. The new training and leisure wear collection from KAPPA, as well as many other fan articles, are already available at the fan shop, in sport outlets and online from www.werder-fanshop.de.
The lowdown on the 2007/2008 kits:
New additions to the collection:
The basis for the new design is the 7th step in the development of the ‘Cool Kombat’ motto which first appeared back in 2000 under the heading ‘Stop, Stopping’. The idea was that players shouldn’t have their jerseys so easily tugged by opponents to hold them up and a more visible offence for the referee to spot should it occur.
The most notable feature of all the new Werder shirts is the ‘V-Neck’ collar and ‘V-Form’ mesh design down the side of the shirt which is used to offer the wearer a more dynamic element. Another feature is the sewed piping in contrasting colours on the sleeves and sides of the jerseys. The large ‘KAPPA’ logos, which were introduced for the first time during the 2006/2007 season are back again on the sleeves. Another new element for the coming season is a Werder Bremen hologram to prove authenticity.
The home kit 2007/2008:
Once again, in classic Werder style, the home shirts will maintain their so widely known green and white colours with some orange included again as a contrasting element. With the exception of the white collar and white meshing down the sides, as well as the KAPPA logos, the new home shirt is totally green. The orange piping and sleeve trimmings are particularly noticeable on the new shirts. The new home jerseys will be worn with white shorts sporting an orange, ‘S-Shaped’ trimming and a green net meshing. As an alternative there are orange shorts with green meshing and white piping. The kit is completed by white socks with a green stripe and the Werder emblem with an orange KAPPA logo.
The away kit 2007/2008:
For the away shirt, the home jersey from 2006/2007 has been maintained with the addition of the new cut. It will be worn with green shorts, sporting an orange piping and KAPPA logo. The socks are completely green.
The Event kit 2007/2008:
The trendy combination of army and lemon in the new ‘Event’ kit were heavily influenced by current fashions, which have rolled over onto the football pitch. The main colour of the jersey, shorts and socks is a so called ‘Army’, which is an olive green shade. The collar and meshing on the jersey and shorts are in lemon with eye catching silver trimmings and KAPPA logos The socks are in ‘Army’ with a lemon stripe, Werder emblem and KAPPA logo.
The goalkeepers kits 2007/2008:
In addition to the new kits there are, in total, four goalkeeper jerseys, which are in identical design to the outfield players shirts, in yellow, sky blue, dark violet and freaky pink. All shirts sport a black collar and meshing down the sides. These shirts are combined with black shorts and socks.
Training and leisure wear:
KAPPA have released a complete training and leisure range for both players and training staff to complement the new kits. The colours ‘Army’, lemon, black and chilli are dominant. Thomas Schaaf will have his very own ‘Coaching’ range which will be available from the fan shop from the beginning of the season.
