The Brazilain national side made a disappointing start to their defence of the Copa America title. Carlos Dunga’s men were beaten 2:0 (2:0) in their Group B opener by Mexico. Werder Bremen’s Diego was in the starting eleven but was substituted at half time. Naldo saw out the game on the bench.
The ‘Selecao’ made a bright start to the game but had no means of breaking down a tightly packed Mexican defence. The ‘El Tri’ were happy to patiently await their chances to counter attack and in the 24th minute, Nery Castillo made it 1:0. Just five minutes later, Ramon Morales doubled the Mexican lead with a free-kick. The Brazilians upped the tempo and pressed hard in the second half but were often frustrated by the heroics of Mexican keeper Guillermo Ochoa.
Brazil will have to work hard if they are to avoid a disaster in their attempted title defence. After the first game in the group, Dunga’s men are bottom of Group B with two goals against and no points. Ecuador are second from bottom of the group after a 3:2 defeat at the hands of Chile who are now second behind Mexico.
