Werder Bremen striker Hugo Almeida and his colleagues from the Portuguese under 21 national team have crashed out of the U 21 European Championships in Holland. Portugal beat Israel 4:0 (2:0) on Saturday evening but as third in their group, they miss the chance to progress to the latter stages of the competition. Hugo Almeida was involved until his substitution in the 67th minute.
Despite a 4:0 win thanks to goals from Manuel Fernandes, Ricardo Vaz Té, Miguel Veloso and Nani, the Portuguese had little reason to celebrate at the end of the game. In Heerenveen, Belgium battled out a 2:2 draw against the already qualified Dutch to take second place and leave the Portuguese behind them. Hugo Almeida’s side were left in a thankless third place, one point adrift of the Belgians. In the other ties in the group, Portugal drew 0:0 with Belgium and lost 2:1 against Holland.
