The pictures speak loudly and clearly for themselves. Directly at the final whistle, captain Frank Baumann sank to the floor, twenty meters away vice captain Torsten Frings was doing the same thing. Miroslav Klose lay in the penalty area staring at the heavens before being helped to his feet by a kindly Dr. Markus Merk, the referee on the day. Co-trainer Matthias Hönerbach slipped away to the changing rooms exclaiming: “The dream is over”.

There were not many capable of putting their emotions into words: “This is massively disappointing, you just feel so empty and that’s tough to swallow”, explained Frank Baumann to WERDER.TV. The captain found it difficult to look back over the last 33 games: “It’s difficult for us to explain. We are all feeling very down because of the great chance we missed this year. We simply didn’t deserve to become champions because we lost games like the one today.”

Torsten Frings was one of the final players to leave the pitch after Saturday’s game and he summed his emotions up by stating: “I said during the winter break that we can only beat ourselves – and that’s exactly what we’ve done. We didn’t lose out on the title just today but in other games such as the one against Bielefeld.” Klaus Allofs had to console his midfield playmaker Diego on the way down the tunnel. The Brazilian simply remarked: “I’M deeply disappointed. I came to Bremen to win titles but we haven’t achieved that. I’m still convinced that we have a quality team and we will have to go for it all again next season.”

It wasn’t only the little number ten who found it difficult to understand why such a team were finishing a very promising season with nothing to show for it. Frank Baumann feels the Werder side could just have burnt out at the last: “We wanted to become champions but at the end we just lacked the energy we needed to do that. A lot of our internationals came back from the World Cup after a very short break. Then we also had more games internationally than anyone else. That was clear to see by the end.”

It wasn’t just a burnt out tired side that was to blame for the disappointment of leaving the title race on the penultimate day of the season. General manager Klaus Allofs commented: “Despite leading the pack at Christmas, we weren’t consistent enough over the course of the season. We lost five home games, that’s just too many. There are a number of reasons for that. A lack of energy and a number of injury problems are not the only ones. Looking back at the games we are not just talking about good and bad luck – we simply weren’t good enough.” The ex-Werder striker doesn’t believe that the speculation surrounding the futures of Klose and Frings had much of a roll to play: “No, these things are all part of professional football and you have to deal with that.”
