Werder Bremen have pulled off their next coup as they look to the future. On Thursday, just 24 hours after having secured the further services of Torsten Frings and a week after putting an end to the speculation surrounding Miroslav Klose, general manager Klaus Allofs announced the premature contract extension of Brazilian central defender Naldo. The 24 year old has vowed to remain on the Weser until 30.06.2012. His previous contract would have expired on June 30th 2009.
General manager Klaus Allofs commented: “It’s very positive when a player associates with Werder Bremen and sees his future here at the club. In a very short space of time the central defender has become an essential part of the Werder team and a top player. It’s been a better development than we could have possible imagined. That’s why we wanted to tie him to us for a longer period.”
Naldo didn’t waste time in signing on the dotted line: I am very happy in Bremen and my family feel at home here. I have really developed amazingly here and would like to continue that. I am part of a great team with a back room staff, club leadership and a group of people who are simply fantastic. I’ve really been taken under their wings here. I feel very comfortable and wish to remain in Bremen.”
Trainer Thomas Schaaf is equally happy about the extended cooperation: “I’m delighted that he feels he’s heading in the right direction and wants to continue that. When he first joined us nobody knew his name. He changed all that this season with truly fabulous performances. He has played his way into the Brazilian national squad and that says it all.”
Naldo arrived in Bremen in 2005 and became an immediate first choice making 32 appearances in his first season. This season so far the Brazilian has made 30 appearances for the club and scored six goals – one of the leagues most dangerous defenders in front of goal. The defender lives in Bremen with his wife Carla and son Naldinho who was born in the city.
