Werder Bremen are still hot on the coat tails of both Stuttgart and Schalke in the final stretch to take the Bundesliga championship and are eager to take three vital points against Eintracht Frankfurt at the weekend. For the all important tie, coach Thomas Schaaf will have to make do without the services of Tim Borowski (knee ligament tear) and Per Mertesacker (meniscus tear). Both players were put through their paces by physio Stefan Wolters on Tuesday: “I’ve been putting pressure on for about a week now and I’ve had no problems”, explained Borowski. Per Mertesacker has also been making steady progress: “We had an intensive training session today and things are going very well. I’d really like to get back into the thick of things soon but we will see how long it takes before I can rejoin full team training.”
Werder’s playmaker Diego was absent from training on Tuesday: “Diego and Frank Baumann are both carrying slight knocks but should be back tomorrow”, commented an optimistic Thomas Schaaf who hopes to see the duo back on Wednesday.
Still unclear is the availability of Christian Schulz. The 24 year old picked up a bad eye injury against Hertha BSC Berlin and on Tuesday the German international joined Frank Bauman for some light jogging. On ‘WERDER.TV’ Schulle gave his first interview since Sunday’s horrific challenge by Josip Simunic. He admitted receiving constant scores from the game whilst being stitched in the hospital. The complete interview will be available on WERDER.TV from Wednesday morning.
