Werdr Bremen have suffered a major set-back in their efforts to win the German championship. On match day 30, the Green-Whites were beaten 3:2 (1:0) by Armenia Bielefeld. On the half hour, Heiko Westermann put his side in front. In the 59th minute, Miroslav Klose scored his thirteenth goal of the season to even things up but juts two minutes later, Jonas Kamper restored the home sides lead. Werder ‘Super-Sub’ Hugo Almeida equalized again just four minutes after being introduced, making it 2:2 (74’). Armenia struck back again in the 80th minute through Christian Eigler to take all three points in a highly dramatic game.

Following their 3:0 defeat in the UEFA Cup semi final against Espanyol Barcelona, trainer Thomas Schaaf made three changes to his starting eleven. Andreas Reinke replaced Tim Wiese between the posts – Wiese is suspended for the UEFA Cup second leg tie and Reinke was given the opportunity to gather some match practice. Markus Rosenberg got the nod ahead of Aaron Hunt to join Miroslav Klose in attack and Jurica Vranjes returned to the starting selection, forcing Daniel Jensen back to the bench.

Diego strikes the post

The relegation threatened club from Bielefeld made a bright start, producing the first shot on goal in the game after just two minutes but Jörg Böhme’s effort failed to test Reinke. The game developed quickly into a fast, intensive and exciting match. From a one-two with Torsten Frings, Clemens Fritz delivered a perfect cross from the by-line to the head of Diego. The Brazilian frustratingly saw his effort bounce out off the inside of the post and Robert Tesche was able to clear before the prowling Klose could pounce on the loose ball (7’). The German international had his chance just four minutes later but hesitated too long with his shot and the opening was shut down. At the other end, Tesche stooped in to test Reinke with a diving header – the 38 year old reacted excellently to deny Armenia the lead. The home side had a point to prove about their determination to remain in the top flight but it was the visitors who had the bulk of the possession and chances. Example – Jurica Vranjes played unselfishly square to Markus Rosenberg when shooting himself was clearly the cleverer option (21’). Diego broke forward and jinked past two defenders before passing to Frings who drove a shot just over the crossbar.

Westermann punishes slack defending

Werder were forcing the issue, but it was Armenia Bielefeld who surprisingly took the lead from a set piece. Jörg Böhme swung a free kick from the right into the penalty area where Heiko Westermann powered in and rose, unmarked, to head past a hapless Andreas Reinke (30’). Bielefeld were not satisfied with sitting back on their lead but instead pressed to find a second. Over and again the East West Phalian club put a somewhat forlorn looking Werder Bremen under pressure, in particular on the left with an impressive Jörg Böhme and Tobias Rau. The visitors went into the half time break a goal down despite efforts from Naldo (41’) and Diego (45’) to level things up.

Werder draw level

Thomas Schaaf made two changes at half time, bringing Daniel Jensen in for Frank Baumann and Aaron Hunt for Jurica Vranjes. The message was clear – Werder attack!!! The visitors went in search of an equalizer. A double chance should have been enough to get Werder back on level terms but neither Klose nor Rosenberg could beat Mathias Hain in the Bielefeld goal (51’). It was a Hunt corner which eventually lead to the equalizer. Klose climbed highest and headed goalwards but Böhme was able to clear off the line but the Werder striker refused to give up the cause and reacted quickest to turn the loose ball home – 1:1 (59’).

’Super-Subs’ Kamper and Almeida strike

Werders joy at drawing level was stunningly short lived as substitute Jonas Kamper took on a long pass from Tesche and struck low and hard past Reinke from 13 meters out. The home side could have made it 3:1 through Christian Eigler before Werder could find an answer. Thomas Schaaf had replaced Petri Pasanen with Hugo Almeida and soon after, the brave move was to pay dividends. Werder had opted for all out attack and the Portuguese striker was to make an instant impact. Klose battled hard out on the right to win the ball from Böhme before swinging a perfect cross to the head of Almeida. Hain got a hand to the header but couldn’t deny Werder’s second equalizer – 2:2 (77’).

Eigler scores the decider

The sides weren’t to stay level for very long. Again the amazingly resilient Armenia Bielefeld struck to regain the lead – this time it was Christian Eigler who made it 3:2. Masmanidis crossed into the penalty area where Naldo and Reinke obstructed one another and the ball fell to the Bielefeld striker who shot into an empty net (80’). Werder threw everything into attack but Bielefeld managed to battle through to the finish and, not undeservedly, take all three points.

Werder didn’t only miss the chance to return to the top of the league but also lost three players for next weekend’s Sunday tie with Hertha BSC Berlin. Naldo, Aaron Hunt and Hugo Almeida each received their fifth yellow card and are suspended for the upcoming game.
