Werder Bremen's central defensive tower succesfully underwent a meniscus operation on his right knee on Tuesday morning. Dr. Med. Ulrich Boenisch, director of the Hessingpark-Clinic in Augsburg, performed the surgery on the 22 year old who will remain in the clinic for observation until Thursday evening. Mertesacker commented: “I have come through the operation without problems. So far, so good.”
The Werder trainer was happy to hear trh positive news from his defender but the coach knows he will be without his World Cup participant for some time: “Per will undertake the first phase of his rehabilitation with Klaus Eder in Donaustauf”, explained Schaaf. The German national teams physio looked after Mertesacker following his heel operation in July and got the defender back to full fitness.
Shortly before the end of Easter Saturday's clash with 1. FC Nuremberg, Mertesacker twisted his knee, without the influence of an opposition player, and was force to retire from the game early.
