Some pre-match facts as Werder travel to Holland to face AZ Alkmaar.

Did you know...

...that AZ Alkmaar have played 30 European ties at home and have yet to lose one?

Despite having a mere 17,000 places, the DSB-Stadium which opened last summer has become something of a fortress for AZ.

...that until now, Alkmaar have only once had to face German opposition? In the round of the last 32 in the UEFA Cup, during the 2004/2005 season, the Dutch side drew 0:0 with Alemannia Aachen at the Tivoli before winning the second leg 2:1. Alkmaar made it through to the semi-final.

...that Alkmaar are the top goascorers in the current competition? Alkmaar have scored 25 goals in the tournament so far, hitting the target in all ten of their previous games.

...that AZ have lost just one away game in the competition thus far? The Dutch side were beaten 4:2 by Newcastle United. They have also won two and drawn three.

...that Alkmaar have been in the UEFA Cup final in the past? During the 1980/1981 season, AK made it to the UEFA Cup final where they were beaten 3:0 by Ipswich Town in England. The second leg 4:2 win at home wasn't enough to take the title.

...that when Werder play Alkmaar, a number of players who once played together for Ajax Amsterdam, will meet up again? Petri Pasanen played for Ajax between 2000 and 2004 along side Joey Didulica, Tim de Cler, Shota Arveladze and Nourdin Boukhari. In 2005/2006 Boukhari and Markus Rosenberg were also team mates at Ajax.
