On Thursday afternoon at the Weser Stadium administration centre, striking talent Kevin Schindler signed his first professional contract. The 18 year old front man has pledged to continue his co-operation with Werder Bremen until 30.06.2011. Once again the Green-Whites have managed to guide one of their own youngsters through to the full Bundesliga squad. Schindler joined Werder from DTB Delmenhorst back in 1999 as an Under 9 player.
General manager Klaus Allofs is delighted about the future dealings between Schindler and the club: “Kevin’s life won’t be changed by this but the expectations and demands upon him will increase. We are convinced, due to his performances in recent weeks, that he will bravely approach this new challenge.”
Trainer Thomas Schaaf holds his young attacker in high regard: “He completely unexpectedly got the opportunity to show us what he is capable of and took the chance that was presented to him by injuries to other players. The manner in which he approached this opportunity and used his chance really impressed us. He has deserved the chance to develop yet further with us.”
Schindler knows himself exactly what this new contract means: “I haven’t achieved anything with just my signature, that’s just the beginning. I know that I have a lot to learn”, acknowledged Schindler, who knows that despite the problems he caused for Celta Vigo in the UEFA Cup during his professional debut, that he still has some work to do with the reserves. His goal for the coming weeks: “I want to improve with the professionals, help the Under 23 side to the best league position possible and if the Under 18’s still have a chance at the German championship, I’d like to do my bit there too.”
The contract is just the next step in a rapid and positive development for the youngster. At the beginning of the season he was part of the Under 18 squad, and quickly made people sit up and take notice, which quickly lead to him finding a spot in the reserves and earning a call up to the German Under 19 selection. A number of injuries to members of the first team allowed him the chance to participate in January’s trainings camp in Turkey. Impressive performances in friendly games lead Schindler to become a regular name in the Bundesliga 18 man squad and then his eventual debut in the UEFA Cup against Celta Vigo: “It’s all happened so quickly. If someone had have told me that this would happen six months ago, I would have declared him insane”, commented the 18 year old.
